Working towards a sustainable EU economy, the European Green Deal is European Commission’s plan of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent, with zero net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. Contributing towards this target, leading data centre operators and trade associations from across Europe, have joined forces under the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact (CNDCP), aiming through a self-regulatory initiative to make data centers climate-neutral by 2030, and ensuring they are an integral part Europe’s sustainable future. Simplex, Cyprus’ leading data centre operator, committed to a carbon-neutral future and having adopted many green technologies in both of its data centers, LIM1 and the new LCA1, which has just operated at the end of 2020, signed the Pact on 1 February 2021, becoming the first data center operator from Cyprus to join CNDCP, demonstrating the company’s leadership in sustainability, too. The CNDCP is a self-regulatory initiative according to which its members/signatories agree to take specific actions with measurable targets in the areas of:
Michael Omerou, Managing Director of Simplex, said in a statement: “Simplex has always been sensitive in sustainability matters. Despite of operating two data centers in a country with non-favourable weather conditions, we have engaged in a series of actions to improve our existing facility’s energy efficiency and have adopted green UPS and cooling solutions for our new data center. We are also committed to reuse of equipment, or recycle it when reuse is not possible. Thus, joining the Pact came naturally for Simplex. In a world where digital infrastructure and connectivity are more critical than ever, at Simplex we won’t make any compromises on sustainability and we will work to meet the Pact’s defined targets in all action areas.” Representatives from the data centre trade associations and companies that have signed the Pact, and the European Commission will meet twice annually to review the status of the initiative. With the initial period of measurement being 2022, the signatories will need to certify adherence by July 1, 2023 the latest with adherence being reported and re-certified every four years after initial certification.
The Climate Neutral Data Center Pact is a self-regulatory initiative of European data centre operators and trade associations committed to the European Green Deal, achieving the ambitious greenhouse gas reductions of the climate law, and leveraging technology and digitalization to achieve the goal of making Europe climate neutral by 2050. To ensure data centres are an integral part of the sustainable future of Europe, data centre operators and trade associations agree to make data centres climate neutral by 2030.
